Estimating ecosystem maximum light use efficiency based on the water use efficiency principle

چکیده

Light use efficiency (LUE) defines the vegetation of converting radiative energy into biochemical through photosynthesis. Estimating maximum LUE (εmax) is critical yet challenging for quantifying gross primary production (GPP) using LUE-based models. This study describes an analytical method estimating εmax based on water (WUE) as determined by plant and carbon gain. Unlike other complex parameterization schemes, this WUE-based simple requires four variables relatively easy to acquire. The estimates compare favorably well with values traditional curve fitting that reported in literature, clearly distinguished between C3 (1.48 ± 0.33 ) C4 (2.63 0.21 dominated ecosystems. range was narrow across different years sites within a biome. estimate theoretically constrained can be directly incorporated models GPP estimation

Topical Review on Stomata and Water Use Efficiency Stomatal Size, Speed, and Responsiveness Impact on Photosynthesis and Water Use Efficiency

The control of gaseous exchange between the leaf and bulk atmosphere by stomata governs CO2 uptake for photosynthesis and transpiration, determining plant productivity and water use efficiency. The balance between these two processes depends on stomatal responses to environmental and internal cues and the synchrony of stomatal behavior relative to mesophyll demands for CO2. Here we examine the ...

Estimating Water Use Efficiency in Bioenergy Ecosystems Using a Process-Based Model

Bioenergy, made available from materials derived from biological sources, has been widely considered as one of the major renewable and sustainable energy sources to enhance energy security and mitigate climate change [Beringer et al., 2011; Fargione et al., 2010]. Food grain is currently the most popularly used biomass feedstock for biofuel production, e.g., maize (Zea Mays L.) grain for bioeth...

Breeding for high water-use efficiency.

There is a pressing need to improve the water-use efficiency of rain-fed and irrigated crop production. Breeding crop varieties with higher water-use efficiency is seen as providing part of the solution. Three key processes can be exploited in breeding for high water-use efficiency: (i) moving more of the available water through the crop rather than it being wasted as evaporation from the soil ...

Effects of climate change on water use efficiency in rain-fed plants

Water use efficiency (WUE) reflects the coupling of the carbon and water cycles and is an effective integral trait for assessing the responses of vegetated ecosystems to climate change. In this study, field experiments were performed to examine leaf WUE (WUEleaf) in response to changes in CO2 concentration and other environmental variables, including soil moisture and air temperature. We al...

Temporal and among-site variability of inherent water use efficiency at the ecosystem level

[1] Half-hourly measurements of the net exchanges of carbon dioxide and water vapor between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere provide estimates of gross primary production (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) at the ecosystem level and on daily to annual timescales. The ratio of these quantities represents ecosystem water use efficiency. Its multiplication with mean daylight vapor pressure...
